The bulk of the collection pertains to Willis Madden, a free African American tavern keeper of Culpeper County, Va. The papers contain correspondence, primarily of Sarah Madden and Willis Madden; an apprenticeship indenture, 1760, for Sarah Madden; a certificate, 1826, of free birth for Willis Madden; a certificate of freedom, 1822, for Kitty Clark; a deed, 1835, for land in Culpeper County, Va.; requisitions for livestock and produce during the Civil War; tax receipts; financial records; and extensive genealogical notes.
